Library Assistant/Outreach Associate Position

LIBRARY ASSISTANT/OUTREACH ASSOCIATE POSITION

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Director

Under general supervision, the Library Assistant/Outreach Associate provides direct customer service and delivery service using the Mobile Transit Cargo Van to library patrons who are not able to visit the library. These patrons may include daycares, senior care facilities, Amish schools and Northmor schools, and the home delivery patrons. This position is the library's primary contact to outreach patrons and will be responsible for developing and maintaining these relationships. One (1) to two (2) years of related experience is required. Ability to load, unload, lift, shelve, transfer, and/or transport 125 lbs. is required. Other related duties include taking the Mobile Transit Cargo Van to special events to represent the library, creating and maintaining borrower accounts following library policy, checking library materials in and out, assisting the public with library services, handling issues related to missing or overdue items, and other related tasks. The Library Assistant/Outreach Associate also assists with the maintenance of the library collection including shelving, organizing, and maintaining library materials.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • A minimum of (1) year of customer service experience.
  • One (1) to two (2) years of related experience is required.
  • Ability to work days, evenings, and weekends is required. The schedule may change as the needs of the library change.
  • Must possess a valid State of Ohio driver's license and acceptable driving record, with maintenance of eligibility to operate motor vehicles under the acceptability standards of the vehicle liability insurance carrier of the library.
  • Monitors condition and performance of Transit Cargo Van and reports any issues to the Director.
  • Must satisfactorily complete a background investigation.

  • General knowledge of library policies, procedures, and techniques.
  • General knowledge of Dewey decimal classification systems.
  • General knowledge of popular books, authors, movies, and music.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with the Director and co-workers.
  • Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Ability to multitask and shift priorities as required.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of patron records and interests.
  • Ability to pay attention to detail.

 

PUBLIC SERVICE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Professionally respond to patron inquiries in person, by phone, or e-mail.
  • Assist patrons in locating and selecting library materials and other information.
  • Check library materials in and out using the Integrated Library System (ILS).
  • Provide instruction to patrons on the use of library equipment.
  • Interpret and explain library policies and procedures.
  • Register patrons for library cards following library policy.
  • Handle financial transactions for patron services and fines/fees.
  • Follow library opening and closing procedures for efficient service and building security.

 

COLLECTION MAINTENANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Sorts and shelves all types of library materials.
  • Shifts materials as needed, maintaining order and appearance.
  • Shelf reads collections - ability to arrange items in alphanumeric and/or subject order.
  • Develops attractive displays of books and other materials, marketing various areas of the collection.
  • Searches for items on monthly collection maintenance lists.

 

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

  • Maintains and increases knowledge and skills through attendance at staff meetings, training, and other continuing education opportunities.
  • Adheres, supports, and effectively implements administration and library board policy.
  • Understands and upholds the principles of Intellectual Freedom.
  • Performs duties associated with the processing of library materials through statewide delivery.
  • Performs additional duties and assignments, as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • All library positions require some or varying levels of physical activity, including standing, walking, reaching, squatting, lifting, carrying, pushing, and grasping.
  • Ability to sit/stand and use computer and standard office equipment for extended periods daily.
  • Work may be performed in, but not limited to: public office buildings, private businesses, outdoors, and inside homes.
  • Ability to work and drive in adverse weather conditions.
  • Requires driving and operating Transit Cargo Van.
  • Employees should be able to lift and/or carry 30 lbs. consistently and 75 lbs. frequently.
